Two degrees of ...

I went to a friends dinner for her birthday just recently and the subject of the weird Brisbane thing came up. You see I've met one of the six or so people before and yet we all knew not just our lovely hostess but other people who we all knew. In Brisbane it's more like two degrees than the fabled six degrees of separation.

So thinking that maybe I had missed something while living in Sydney/Bristol (I won't count Armidale, there were only 25,000 people and still the Brisbane effect had effect) I asked if it wasn't the same everywhere but our hostess and a couple of the other guests affirmed that it's a Brisbane specific thing - even out of towner's get weirded out the first time they come across the effect. One of the guests also pointed out that it's not just cross the geek-crowds (or alternative or whatever) but it actually works across all kinds of work places and everyday lives.

Brisbane's got over 1.6 million people at the moment, surely this is a statistical anomaly - maybe someone needs to do a study.

Now me and neko just need to work out the inner city synchronicity thing ;)
